Rental Transformer Frequently-Asked Questions
Click on question marks below to get answers to these frequently-asked questions.
Why would I rent a transformer?
Frequently an electrical power transformer is rented for a few weeks or even a few months as a temporary replacement for a failed transformer until a permanent new replacement can be purchased. Sometimes Electrical Contractors rent power transformers for construction projects. And frequently electrical transformers are rented to perform load bank tests on generators.
I never heard of renting a large power transformer. Is it something new?
No, actually MIDWEST has rented electrical oil filled transformers and dry type power transformers for years. It has become more common with the increased demand for uninterrupted production. By renting a silicone or oil filled electrical power transformer, a plant may restore power temporarily in a matter of hours rather than days or weeks.

Isn’t it hard to match a failed transformer? There are so many different voltages, kva, types, sizes. It seems so unlikely that even temporary replacement electrical transformer would be available.
Yes, there are many different types. Oil, silicone, Rtemp, general purpose dry type, air cooled, fan cooled, Cast Coil, encapsulated, nitrogen filled, indoor, outdoor, metal enclosed, vertical bushings, horizontal bushings, high voltage, low voltage, substation, unit substation, delta wye, wye delta, delta delta, wye wye, buck boost, zig zag, isolated,K Factor, cooper wound, aluminum wound, nitrogen sealed, free breathers, conservator tank, transformer oil, mineral oil, fan cooled radiators on one side or two sides, pad mount, pole top, three phase, single phase, liquid filled or fluid filled on and on. There are so many different types and configurations of electrical power transformers. But, for a temporary electrical transformer, most of these considerations become unimportant. As long as the transformer is big enough, puts out the right voltage, and is safe, it will operate as a temporary rental transformer. Usually the two critical questions for a rental transformer are Will it work and how fast can I get it?
Well, how fast can I get one? It takes weeks, if not months, to get a new transformer.
About as long as it takes to make a 2:00 AM phone call, load the transformer and truck it to where ever you are.
Hmm. Are most transformer rentals this dramatic?
No, often transformers are rented for scheduled generator load bank tests. These are usually scheduled weeks ahead. Frequently Electrical Contractors or General Contractors schedule rental power transformers for temporary construction power.
Any unusual requests for an electrical rental transformer?
Once in a while there is a request for a special “Test Setup” or a manufacturer may have a temporary production power requirement. And sometimes rental transformers are used just as temporary backup power.
What about all the switches and cables for a temporary rental transformer? Where do you get that on short notice or in the middle of the night?
Ah, yes. Good question! But we have thought of that. MIDWEST has high voltage and low voltage cable “ready to go” for rent. And high voltage and low voltage switches, circuit breakers, switchgear, transfer switches and a massive selection of lugs and terminations and fuses available for rent.
Does that mean that any of the electrical transformers and switchgear that you sell is also for rent?
Yes it is. But we also have equipment that is part of the “Rental Pool” and is not for sale. We do this to maintain the equipment diversity necessary to meet our customer’s needs.
Why would I need to rent a transformer?
A rental transformer is needed if you experience a failure. A medium voltage transformer may take several weeks to repair, so a temporary replacement is needed to restore service.
Do you sell rental transformers?
Yes, we recondition transformers at the MIDWEST Switchgear Division.
